A California man was arrested after he was captured by a doorbell camera dragging his estranged girlfriend by the hair and assaulting her. 27-year-old Robert Michael Mendez is facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.
Police say the woman, who has not been identified, was being held against her will by Mendez but managed to escape and tried to get help from the neighbors. A doorbell camera captured the chilling moment as the woman started banging on the front door screaming for help. Mendez was right behind her and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her off the porch. He dragged her back to his home, which was down the street, and continued to assault her.
“I thought she was going to die. It was really traumatic to watch,” Tammy Raycraft told KCAL. “We looked out the side window over here and witnessed him stomping on her, pulling her by her hair. It was awful.”
The homeowners sent the video to the police, who began canvassing the neighborhood. They knocked on his door and identified him as the suspect. They found the woman inside and she was rushed to the hospital with significant injuries. Mendez was taken into custody without incident.
Police say the woman had been held at Mendez’s house since Sunday (September 29) night.
Neighbors said that Mendez kept to himself, though they noticed a variety of different cars coming and going from his house.
“I’m just so thankful that the police caught him,” Raycraft said. “I hope she stays away from him.”
