2.3M pounds of seasoned ground beef has been yanked from restaurants, distribution centers
Yo quiero Taco Bell, but that side of metal slivers—not so much. CNN and USA Today report the fast-food chain recalled about 2.3 million pounds of seasoned beef Friday from distribution centers and restaurants in nearly two dozen states after a customer says they found a metal shaving in their meal.
“As soon as we received the first consumer complaint, we immediately acted to remove the product from the affected restaurants and proactively worked with the supplier to inform the USDA of our steps to protect our guests,” Julie Masino, Taco Bell’s North America chief, says in a release. In its own posting, the Department of Agriculture notes there have been “no confirmed reports of adverse reactions” from anyone eating Taco Bell fare.
The beef in question is used in the chain’s tacos and burritos and was produced by Kenosha Beef International between Sept. 20 and Oct. 4; the meat comes in cases of eight 5-pound plastic bags, with the imprinted number “EST. 10130.” Kenosha, which says it received three customer complaints itself, produced the beef and shipped it to five distribution centers, which in turn sent the beef to restaurants nationwide.
By midday Monday, all of the affected product had been removed from Taco Bell locations in 21 states in the eastern Midwest, northern Southeast, and Northeast, per the restaurant release. “Nothing is more important than our customers’ safety, and nothing means more to us than their trust,” Masino says.
