Horrific Highway Crash Leaves Multiple People Dead, Dozens More Injured

At least five people died after a tour bus struck an embankment and caused a major pileup on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The bus was traveling westbound when the driver lost control while going around a curve. Three semi-trucks, including a FedEx truck filled with packages, and a passenger vehicle, collided with the bus around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday (January 5) morning. Officials said that 60 people were taken to local hospitals with various injuries.

Officials had to shut down an 86-mile stretch of the highway in both directions because debris from the crash was spread out along both the eastbound and westbound side of the roadway. Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash. There was light precipitation, and the temperature hovered around the freezing mark at the time, but investigators cautioned that it would be “premature” to say if the weather was a factor.

“Saddened to learn of the fatal pileup crash on the @PA_Turnpike this morning,” Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf said in a tweet. “Keeping victims and their families in my prayers. Efforts by @PAStatePolice and responders prevented further loss of life.”
