A Florida woman has been arrested in the shooting death of her 21-year-old friend. 51-year-old Yvonne Serrano called 911 to report the body of an unknown woman in her driveway. When the police arrived, they found the body of Daniela Tabares Maya “partially inside” the driver’s side of a Nissan with a gunshot wound to her forehead.
Investigators began questioning Serrano and she initially claimed that she did not know the woman. As they continued to press her, Serrano began to change her story. She told them that she did know Maya and that they had gone out to see the movie 21 Bridges with a group of friends from their gym.
After the movie, they walked to a bar down the street to have some drinks. Serrano claimed she blacked out and did not remember how she got home.
Authorities determined Maya drove her home after reviewing surveillance footage that showed Maya’s Nissan pulling into Serrano’s driveway around 2 a.m. Serrano did not call 911 until 5:55 a.m. and reportedly washed her clothes and deleted video footage from her Ring doorbell first.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for Serrano’s home and found a 9mm handgun that matched the shell casing found inside Maya’s car. Serrano was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Officials have not determined a motive for the shooting.
